Yep, this is another one from the depths of XDA Devs. They sure like ripping things from within leaked ROMs an official roms to making them stand alone. Not too sure about the legality of all that stuff either, but it’s still kind of exciting to see stuff like this one come out of there.

So, this is the Facebook Application that was extracted from a leaked WM 6.5 Rom. There are some issues with it, but if you follow the fixes and installation instructions that this thread share, you can have this application running as a stand alone app.

Cool application. Best Facebook application for WM devices. Works without a hitch on my Samsung Omnia. As to the legal aspects of ripping this software, I cannot comment.
  • I think the legality is pretty straightforward (assuming the ROM is copyrighted). The people doing the ripping are taking a copyrighted work and redistributing it, which seems clearly illegal. Nothing in the Fair Use doctrine that I'm aware of would permit that, either.

It seems similar to buying a CD and uploading a track to a P2P service.

In addition, most software license agreements have provisions against reverse engineering (although I recall reading about some Windows Mobile device that didn't), so even if the owner lives in a country with no copyright law (or tries to claim ignorance), he could also possibly be in violation of his license agreement. (Pretty scary, I know. :D It's more about having given your word and then reneging.)
