iPhone 3.0 Rumored Info

closeThis post was published 8 months 5 days ago.
It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

Maybe the following list is 100% true as indicated at BGR, but until we get closer, I am going to have to classify the info as such, rumor. BGR can’t tell us who dropped this info, but they mentioned that it was someone in high places at AT&T.

  • New iPhone announcement around mid-June
  • New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
  • U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
  • The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
  • Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
  • AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
  • Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going…
  • They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
  • Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
  • The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won’t be a Windows OS.

How can AT&T be launching U-Verse on an iPhone when the 3G coverage in the US is pretty sparse for the most part across the US? All these bullet items sound like some sort of marketing slide internal to AT&T. Let’s just start with 3G in Alabama… And no, I am not talking about rural Alabama either.

    That's what AT&T mucky-mucks care about, Chris. They don't care about features in the OS. :D

    I've read that iPhone 3.0 will finally catch up with a lot of Windows Mobile functions, including:

    * Copy/paste
    * Bluetooth A2DP audio
    * MMS
    * Video recording

    Maybe Apple is taking a page from Microsoft, requiring three releases to get it right. (I wish Microsoft had only taken three releases with Windows Mobile. :D)

  • I suspect Mercury is correct about the U-Verse app just being a fancy remote control. I would pitch it more like the DirectTV (or Dish?) app, though, pointing out that you can program your DVR remotely.

    I wouldn't talk about pause, fast forward and rewind because that might lead people to think you can actually watch the video on the iPhone. They'll be disappointed when they find out it's just a remote control and those features don't make sense to use remotely.

    I hope this continues to push other manufacturers to improve thier devices. Although if they caught up now they would still be behind. Don't get me wrong I love my WM Phone but a slicker OS would be nice.

    @Chris

    The U-Verse app doesn't put U-Verse on the iPhone; it just controls the DVR you have at home if you have U-Verse.

    If you had one product that was as solid as the iPhone, what improvments could you make in a year? If they can add a QWERTY keyboard, I'm sure it will be a good one.

    After suffering through all the WinMo device baby steps over the years, I honestly hope a new iPhone comes out and blows everyone away. In 3 years from HTC we get to go from the Tilt to the Fuze to the Touch Pro2? And still no audio jack!?

    Every time I try to use the D-Pad on my Fuze to move over one cell in a spreadsheet and it closes the whole thing, I wonder 'would Apple ever have a product that does this?' Or try to get a GPS fix before I actually arrive at my destination. Or click a link in an email to have IE open it instead of Opera. Or try to take a picture in low light. Or...

    Okay, I'm done.

    I'd guess that there will be new hardware, as all of the original iPhone users will be coming off contract this summer. So, why not have some fancy new handset to get them to switch up?
