This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding. It appears that some people just can’t wait for 3.0 to come out. Others can hold their horses until June. For those that can’t and want to spring for the beta version, they have to pay the $99 that Apple charges to be a registered iPhone Developer that can release apps. Or do they? Inevitably, people have cashed in on the opportunity to get some quick cash and some iPhone registered developers are selling their iPhone device slots on eBay.
So here’s how it works – each phone has an unique identifier, called the UDID. Apple allows each developer a certain number of phones they can use to “develop”, authorized by entering in the UDID on Apple’s site. By selling those slots, devs are putting in the buyer’s UDID into the site, so when the buyer goes to upgrade their phone, Apple’s servers check them out as fine.
I have no idea how Apple will react to this, and nor do I know if this is against Apple’s developer EULA or NDA since I am not a developer myself. Only time will tell.
