A few days ago I commented about the Celio Redfly adding support for BlackBerrys. I came across that bit of information first while researching to purchase a Celio RedFly myself and then while I’ve been …

Are you in the market for one of these small little players? Before you jump on the newly announced iPod Shuffle, look at it in comparison to the Sansa Clip…

PRICE

  • 4GB Shuffle is selling for $79.99 (1,000 songs)
  • 4GB Sansa Clip is only $49.99 – almost the half the price on buy.com and amazon.com (1,000 songs) – 8GB Sansa Clip is $20 more and twice the capacity than the 4GB Shuffle, coming in at $99!

FEATURES

  • Shuffle – new voiceover feature for song, artist and metadata info – have to press a button to hear
  • Sansa Clip – an OLED screen for artist, song and other metadata – always on, easy to see
  • The Sansa Clip also has a FM Tuner and a voice recorder – two bonus features that the Shuffle doesn’t have.

BATTERY LIFE

  • Shuffle battery – 10 hours (per the press release)
  • Sansa Clip battery – 15 hours or more per tests (50% more)

WEIGHT

  • Shuffle – less than a ½ ounce: .38 oz
  • Sansa Clip – less than 1 ounce: .92 oz

Verdict… Toss up… Ok, not much help there, but I can’t give you a winner. They are too close in comparison and I haven’t had a hands on with the Shuffle either.

I picked up a 4GB Sansa Clip on Black Friday. It's a great little player. How can anything so tiny work so good?

Eventual Rockbox support means Clip by a landslide.
  • When my daughter was first looking for an MP3 player, I suggested the original iPod Nano, but she didn't like those. I bought her a SanDisk e250 (I think, the 2 GB one) instead.

It was OK until she misplaced the charging cable. Nobody local sold SanDisk accessories; I would have had to buy one online. Thankfully she found the cable again, but eventually the horrible multi-pin connector got damaged beyond repair.

Since then, she's gotten iPod Nanos.

  • No way I should buy this ipod with its proprietary headphone cord that the manufs have to LICENSE from Apple. I dont get why apple doesn't learn. Due to the forced license model Firewire has never taken off quite as well as USB, yet here they go again. So the last point comparison here that you should have;

Shuffle - Throw out any headphones or any non Apple licensed connections.
Sansa Clip - Hook the clip to any device you want that has a 3.5mm connector.

I'd never buy anything but an iPod at this point, but I would never buy this Shuffle. This idea is a disaster; I cannot believe that Apple would reduce the usability of an iPod, reduce it's battery life, for what? They could easily have added voice over features, playlist support and support for the remote control earphones (introduced last fall with the 4G Nano) to the existing form factor. At least with the 2G shuffle, if your earphones break or are lost, you can use it with another set.

    Dumb, dumb, dumb.
  • Yeah, I'm not trying to be a jerk about it and I love my iPod, but this shuffle is a disaster. If you take into account the fact you can use third party headphones with the Clip and are forced to use officially licensed headphones with the Shuffle, and it seems to be a no brainer. I don't know what the hell Apple is thinking here.
  • There are other variables too, but based on those I listed, you have a point. Maybe EDGE to Clip. I am not an Apple lover, in fact I can't stand the "better than everyone else" attitude that Apple has, but they do have some quality products.
  • Toss up? Besides the weight, it seems like everything else is in favor of the Clip.
