I picked up a 4GB Sansa Clip on Black Friday. It's a great little player. How can anything so tiny work so good?

When my daughter was first looking for an MP3 player, I suggested the original iPod Nano, but she didn't like those. I bought her a SanDisk e250 (I think, the 2 GB one) instead.

It was OK until she misplaced the charging cable. Nobody local sold SanDisk accessories; I would have had to buy one online. Thankfully she found the cable again, but eventually the horrible multi-pin connector got damaged beyond repair.

Since then, she's gotten iPod Nanos.

No way I should buy this ipod with its proprietary headphone cord that the manufs have to LICENSE from Apple. I dont get why apple doesn't learn. Due to the forced license model Firewire has never taken off quite as well as USB, yet here they go again. So the last point comparison here that you should have;

Shuffle - Throw out any headphones or any non Apple licensed connections.
Sansa Clip - Hook the clip to any device you want that has a 3.5mm connector.

I'd never buy anything but an iPod at this point, but I would never buy this Shuffle. This idea is a disaster; I cannot believe that Apple would reduce the usability of an iPod, reduce it's battery life, for what? They could easily have added voice over features, playlist support and support for the remote control earphones (introduced last fall with the 4G Nano) to the existing form factor. At least with the 2G shuffle, if your earphones break or are lost, you can use it with another set.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Yeah, I'm not trying to be a jerk about it and I love my iPod, but this shuffle is a disaster. If you take into account the fact you can use third party headphones with the Clip and are forced to use officially licensed headphones with the Shuffle, and it seems to be a no brainer. I don't know what the hell Apple is thinking here.

There are other variables too, but based on those I listed, you have a point. Maybe EDGE to Clip. I am not an Apple lover, in fact I can't stand the "better than everyone else" attitude that Apple has, but they do have some quality products.

Toss up? Besides the weight, it seems like everything else is in favor of the Clip.
