I agree.
I'm downloading around 2-10 apps a day (yeah, I'm completely addicted), and it seems like 90% of them are complete ju<beep>nk. (but usually a fancy one...)

On the other hand, there are some amazing games and apps which completely blow me away - since the platform is very strong.

For example - you have tons of Tower Defense games, most of them are bad, but there is one which is one of the best games I've ever played (including PC) - and extremely addictive (FieldRunners - link below) - so it's true that it took me maybe 10 games to download and immediately delete, but this one you will not see in any other mobile platform, I'm sure.

Here's a link to a post I wrote about this game and some WinMo alternatives to it:
http://mobilespoon.blogspot.com/2009/01/tower-d...

Hmm so it comes down to being able to use programs like Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Turn by Turn GPS on Windows Mobile or use 100,000 versions of iFart on the iPhone.

It always seemed to me that there were more PalmOS applications than WM. In fact, I recall WM advocates back in the early days arguing that it wasn't quantity but quality that counted. Having twenty apps that do the same thing that two really good apps do on another platform doesn't mean that the one with more apps is better.

And that's probably right. My guess is that there are only a certain number of good, quality productive apps out there for each platform and counting the fluff isn't counting much.

That said, it seems as if a lot of developers are focusing on the iPhone right now, and there are some really cool new things out there. I'm a big baseball fan and, as somebody with a WM phone, I'm jealous that MLB.com has these mobile apps for iPhone and Blackberry and nothing for WM (besides web content, and on WM, that's not a great substitute on WM).

All that said, a billion app downloads in such a short time - Apple must be really pleased.
