Microsoft is NOT Making Phones

Yesterday, there was a lot of buzz about this “Project Pink” phone thing. This was some rumor swirling around that Microsoft was making something for Verizon that many assumed might be a “Zune Phone” that so many have expected over the last couple years. Well, John Starkweather from  Microsoft put out the following late last night…

1) Microsoft is not going into the phone hardware business
2) Microsoft is not building a Zune-specific phone
3) We’re deepening our relationships with our hardware partners in order to create even better performing phones that are competitively priced, have the features people want, that are easy-to-use and just downright lustworthy. The upcoming availability of Windows Mobile 6.5 software will enable our OEM partners to build even more compelling devices in a wide-range of form factors for customers around the world.

Plans change, focus changes, the world changes. Who knows. I trust this source much more than some story in quoting some he said, she said stuff though.

  • Yeah, Microsoft building their own phones doesn't make much sense to me, either. It would alienate their existing partners. (The possible exception might be the Danger part of Microsoft releasing a new Sidekick for T-Mobile that doesn't run Windows Mobile.)

Maybe Microsoft was showing a reference design to Verizon to build some excitement there, hoping Verizon might ask OEMs to produce phones like the reference design. That would make more sense to me.
