They will come from 8-9 different manufacturers (we already know of HTC, Samsung and Lenovo), which is a huge number.

What about Motorola and Acer? I believe they've both said they were working on Android phones (and from everything I've read, Motorola's will come out this year; I don't know about Acer's, but I assume it will).

The downside is that this could lead to fragmentation. I just read a story about that this week, where some people are worried that too much OEM configuration will make updating more difficult (like on Windows Mobile).

Anyway, it's a good second year for Android, but I think they'll still have a ways to go to catch up to Windows Mobile. How many WM handsets come out each year? More than 20, I believe. How many OEMs make those handsets? More than 8 or 9 -- HTC, Samsung, Palm, HP, LG, Motorola, Acer, Sony Ericsson, Gigabyte and Pharos come off the top of my head (although some of their devices may actually be built by common vendors like HTC).

Steve
