As many of you saw, I was at the Indianapolis 500 this weekend. It was hot and muggy and the seats were packed however this was one of the best races I have seen in a few years. A few days before this app came out I was just saying how it would be amazing if they came out with an Indy 500 application for the iPhone. Part one will be what I was hoping it would be and how those expectations and hopes were met.
My expectations for this app was that it would be something that let me lighten the load from our backpacks. When we go to the race we pack the program, the special race day edition of the Indianapolis Star, earbud headphones, protective headphones, radio scanner, sun block, snacks, drinks, and sometimes the kitchen sink ;-). I was hoping that this app would allow me to leave behind the program, paper, and big bulky scanner. Well, I was extremely let down. What I wanted was to show me the starting grid, qualifying speeds, and give me a link to listen to the team radio without the need for the scanner. I was hoping that they would have taken the “high road” like the MLB did and release a truly killer app. We still had to carry along everything listed including the paper for the radio frequencies because they didn’t even list those in the app! Yes I know a small 2 section newspaper isn’t too heavy as it could have even been folded up and put in the back pocket but the point is that they have the technology out there to give us this stuff via the iPhone app and they didn’t.
I’m not sure what radio technology they use for the team radios but in the year 2009 I can’t see it being that hard to take the radio, hook it up to the internet and stream it out for people to listen to with this application.
Now you all see what I was hoping for so now look for part two tonight or tomorrow for what I DID get from the application during the race.
