…on jailbroken phones. Going through Google Reader today shows that the entire iPhone loving and hating internet world is buzzing over the WiFi-only restriction for the iPhone’s SlingPlayer app. However, if you have a jailbroken iPhone, Gear Diary has a nice little tutorial on how you can use the VoIPover3G utility from Cydia to let you access your Sling Box truly on the run. If you have a jailbroken iPhone and a Slingbox you really need to do this. Even if you don’t have a Slingbox, you should do it anyway since you can use this same method to allow for Skype calls over 3G as well. You will need to know how to SSH into your iPhone to do this however there are many tutorials out there to learn how to do it.

A Gear Diary “How-To”: Run the Slingbox iPhone Application on 3G

Short Edit: Upon checking Cydia there is a new tweak called Tricker ThreeG that accomplishes this same thing for SlingPlayer, Fring, and Skype with 0 configuration needed. I just placed a test call over 3G via Skype and it worked without a hitch.
