pre-thumb It’s getting down to crunch time for the Pre. Here are some tidbits from around the web. Seems that there is a lot of excitement around the pending launch.

Do we expect the “Real Reviewers” to get review units before the press? I would certainly hope not, but if we call those “Real Reviewers” beta testers, maybe. Anyhow, Engadget has a take on that and the rash of blog posts and tweets that are claiming ownership of a brand new Palm Pre. They also have a quote regarding the “Real Reviewers” from Palm…

We clearly said “we’ll provide you with a current-model phone and data-plan service for six months” and Pre only once it is available, we never said they would get early Pre units.

Yeah, that sums it up. Gizmodo ran a story the other day with a video of someone actually unboxing a Palm Pre and not just of some boxes like the other day. The problem with the Giz unboxing is that it was from January at CES. It looked like it took place in Palm Pre VIP Lounge that was open all week for those invited.

Are you interested in getting the Pre? I think it’s pretty hot, but I am not totally sold on it being Palm’s savior moving forward. Palm makes some great hardware, so I think it should do ok either way. BTW, who says that Palm can’t put WM 6.5 on the Pre hardware down the road? Anything is possible.

  • How many people are really interested in WM 6.5 on pre hardware....(or any other device) I'm personally liking WM 6.1 w/ tf3d v2 much more than i like 6.5. In fact i will only use 6.5 if it has tf3d v2 built in and the context menu's replaced for HTC's context menu's.

I don't think the Pre's selling point is primarily the hardware, The OS is MUCH more interesting, and what truly has people interested in the device.

I agree. The Pre hardware, while nice and attractive, doesn't seem to set the bar higher than other phones. It's the WebOS that will make or break Palm. If that fails (not that I think it will), they may as well stick witn Windows Mobile (or switch to Android).

I'm not sure what you mean about WM 6.5 context menus, though. Do you want the TouchFlo 3D ones or the WM 6.5 ones?

  • i prefer the HTC tf3d one's even though they are monochromatic. (Like the scrolling menu's that come when you select the soft buttons at the bottom of the screen)

I also forgot to post earlier that if i could spoon WebOs unto existing devices (like the htc touch hd) i'd be a happier camper than putting WM 6.5 on the Pre hardware...but i know i am finding myself more & more disenfranchised with WM.
