Additionally, they need to find a way to accomodate existing iPod/iTunes owners. People don’t want to lost their existing libraries. Apple has heolped this by moving things to a non-DRM format, but there are lots of DRMed tracks out there. MS would assist these people if they offered some kind of credit or something. They have to do something like that to overcome the existing inertia.

I like that idea, Chris. Have some way to get credit for DRM music so you don't have to pay full price again. Of course, the problem is how would Microsoft do that? They'd have to ensure that the DRM track actually belonged to the person (otherwise I could just copy all of my friends' music and get credit for that).

I suspect the answer will be "just convert DRM music to MP3".

I always thought the HD referred to the larger screen resolution; I didn't even know it would have HD radio (but then I don't follow Zune that much). After reading the article, though, I suspect HD refers to everything -- HD radio, HD screen, and HD video support (with the HDMI cradle).

As for the feature we're ALL looking forward, I guess I'm not part of ALL. Sure, an OLED screen is cool, but I don't care much about multi-touch (you don't really need it for lots of gestures). I think the HD radio part is cooler, possibly eliminating the need to buy HD radios for your car and home) and adding browsing support is great to compete with the iPod Touch. Both of those are more compelling reasons for me to buy a Zune than the screen.

Oh, and if it doesn't have a memory card slot, it should.

Steve

P.S. Is there a link to the press release?

The thing is - it isn't just about the device being better. Arguably, the ZUne was a better device than the iPod and that wasn't enough. The whole experience - end to end - must be better and so far it hasn't been.

They need to improve the Zune marketplace and they need to make the library bigger.

My question is whether it will be compatible with existing accessories. Accessories for the Zune are scarce enough (esp. compared to iPod), I'd hate to have to find new ones and re-invest.
