Once the software goes live tomorrow (6/17/09) many carriers worldwide will have MMS ready to go so people can send pictures and videos (on the 3G S) without having to jailbreak. Well, the official word from AT&T is that MMS will be live for iPhone customers later this summer. I have been running the 3.0 GM seed for about a week now and I have yet to get MMS to work however I do have a technical explanation for why it will not work.
Regular “dumbphones” use a technology called WAP PUSH to send the pictures straight to the device. I found out from AT&T Technical Support that iPhone data plans do not yet have the enabled and that is the only thing stopping us from using MMS, even the legit 3.0 developers. In fact, AT&T was getting so many calls from people using the 3.0 GM Developer Seed, that “the system” was changed so that nobody could enable WAP PUSH on an iPhone data plan. I was told that MMS would be live on AT&T later this week, but that was not from any official channel such as a PR Rep, that was from a Tech Support agent. This was not the regular front line customer support line, I think this was the internal tech agents that customers normally don’t get to speak to because I was not asked for my mobile number, name, or account passcode right off the bat like normal customer support. That may help this person’s case a little but, but until I am sending and receiving pictures on my iPhone 3.0, I’ll take that with a grain of salt.
