XP took a little while to be adopted. Still ... I don't remember any previous version of Windows settling down to the point that XP has.

Well, 95 to 98 was say 3 years; 98 to ME was say 2 years; ME to XP was maybe one year; XP to Vista was 5-6 years. So it's not surprising XP has settled down more.

I suspect a similar argument can be made for NT/2000/XP Pro.

I don't think that means XP was "better" than those other versions; it just had more time to get the bugs out. :D

Steve

Agreed; XP took a little while to be adopted. Still ... I don't remember any previous version of Windows settling down to the point that XP has. I'm using both Vista and playing with Windows7. They're both fine - but to sit here and tell you that upgrading to them absolutely revolutionizes anything would be a lie. Adoption of Vista and even W7 is going to be harder than it was for XP because of the stability and functionality XP now has. Will it happen? Yeah. It just won't be as quick.

When it came out, XP was nearly as universally hated as Vista is, unjustly or no. I wonder how much of that hatred, and the Vista-hatred now, was really about the software, about disliking Microsoft, or about fitting in with the cool kids on the web?

Beyond that, it seems we always prefer the devil we know and at this point, most of us know XP pretty damn well.

A more compatible and solid piece of software has never been written[....]

Well, except for the numerous security holes. :D

And, if I recall correctly, when XP first came out, quite a bit of software had compatibility issues with it. Sure, everything is compatible with it now, but people have had 8 years or so to get things right....

Steve
