tpver The folks at WMExperts caught an item  of interest for owners of the Verizon HTC Touch Pro.  It appears as if you will be able to unlock the GPS on your smartphones …. finally!

The new ROM opens up the GPS for use in Google Maps as well as Live Search for Mobile and they indicated that the GPS even works in airplane mode. The update also gives visual voicemail and a new voice codec.

So if you want the update then you need to head over to PhoneNews since they have the only link to the update.

That is great news for verizon windows mobile customers... finally unlocking the gps for google maps and live search. I use my gps and windows live almost daily via a different carrier and love them.
  • I hope Verizon unlocks their other phones (specifically the Omnia). But I'll wait for an official release, not some leak from who-knows-where.

And what's up with this leaked ROM and that site having "the only" link? Somebody should download it, put it on their site and allow direct linking. It's not like Phone News would have anything to complain about -- they're basically pirating software. :D

I wish Verizon would have started unlocking the GPS's on their devices alot earlier. I had a BBerry 8830 that I could have benefited a great deal from having the GPS enabled.
