HTC gives up its fight against 3.5mm headphones.

It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

HTC was there at the birth of the modern smartphone, and ever since then consumers have wished there was a standard headphone jack, but  HTC has stubbornly refused to include one. Well today HTC hass given in saying

“The vast majority of devices we launch after Hero will have a 3.5mm jack.“

This is a major triumph for the will of the consumer. One of the main reasons that people don’t use their Windows Mobile or Android smartphones as media devices is because of the pain in the neck proprietary audio jacks. The stock headphones that come with most devices are uncomfortable or sound very bad when used for any length of time. I know I have suffered for years (since my SMT5600 back in 2004) with having a powerful smartphone with multimedia playing capabilities, but no decent headphones that would work with it. Since the iPhone came out in 2007 more and more companies are beginning to include standard jacks as a way to keep up, and I for one am glad this is happening.

Too bad all the pleading by consumers did nothing. It took device makers like Samsung challenging their market share to finally force the change.

Maybe when they see how many people buy Omnia Pros and Xperia 2s instead of Touch Pro 2s, they'll start to realize they need to make the best devices they possibly can and not just slide by with incremental improvements over previous models.
  • Samsung? My Omnia has one of those stupid proprietary charge/audio jacks. At least Samsung shipped three adapters with the Omnia, -- a 3.5 mm adapter, a 2.5 mm phone adapter and a multi adapter that accepts the other adapters for when you want to charge the Omnia and use a headset.
