iPod Phone?

It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

picture-183-240x300 Wired is reporting that they have strong rumors that the upcoming next gen iPod Touch, expected in September, will be sporting not only a camera, but a mic.

A well-connected source tells us those rumors are on the money, and that Apple’s factories in China are already manufacturing iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones. An Apple spokesman declined to comment when reached by phone.

If iPod Touches with cameras and microphones go on sale “in two to three months,” as our source expects them to (and which corresponds with our expected timeframe), they will transform the entertainment-oriented iPod Touch line into a voice communications tool wherever WiFi is available.

This strikes me as somewhat foolish on Apple’s part. In the past they have always seemed to keep the iPod Touch a bit hamstrung so as to not cut into sales of the far more profitable iPhone. With the growth of Skype and other VoIP services (and their ability to contact normal phones for small fees) an iPod Touch with a mic would essentially become a cheap iPhone able to make free phone calls anywhere there was a solid WiFi connection. AT&T can’t be too happy about that possibility and it is not like Apple to cut into their own profit margin that way.

Still, the concept IS intriguing, and if true gives me even more reason to upgrade my First Generation  iPod Touch this fall.

Perhaps, this might seem strange at first, but it could very well be a "test" by Apple. In other words, what if Apple is secretly trying to find ways to "break the backs" of the Telcoms control over their devices and put "all" the "control" back in Apple's hands?
  • How worried should AT&T really be?

First, PDAs have had microphones for voice recording for years. A mic can also be used with VOIP, but it has other uses.

Second, how many people here would rely only on a phone with WiFi for its connection or be willing to carry an iPod Touch for VOIP and a cell phone? I certainly wouldn't.

If people are willing to do that, maybe other carriers should worry more. On AT&T, I can at least get a real iPhone, but I can't on Verizon or Sprint (or T-Mobile unless I unlock the iPhone). They might worry that an iPod Touch with VOIP would cannibalize their market.

I don't see as Apple cutting into the iPhone sale's. If the Touch does have the mic not too many people are willing to cancel their iPhone with AT&T to get a Touch to make calls with Wi-Fi. I think Apple will increase sales because many will want to upgrade from the first generation or second generation to get this, so I think more sales for Apple.
