In their second wave of comments, Apple was pretty clear that they broke the Pre's ability to sync with iTunes intentionally.

Here is the comment Apple made to BusinessWeek...

“iTunes 8.2.1 is a free software update that provides a number of important bug fixes,” says Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. “It also disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre. As we’ve said before, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with unsupported digital media players.”

That looks very intentional, and I feel was a very bad move. First of all it punctures Apaple's stance that iTunes is agnostic, and not a propriatary app just for syncing their own products. Secondly it starts bringing up all manner of anti-trust and fair usage issues which are already being discussed, (for example, here.... http://www.pcworld.com/article/168446/Apples_iP... ) The last few months Apple has really been messing up PR wise.
I guess the big question is whether Apple intentionally broke the Pre's syncing (not nice and could be subject to possible antitrust issues) or if their updates accidentally broke the syncing and Apple just didn't bother testing with the Pre (understandable as it's not a product they claim to support).

As for Palm, I can understand why they wouldn't want to get into a cat-and-mouse game with Apple (like Microsoft MSN did with AOL AIM back in the day).

Steve
