Best Buy Display Units Not Enough

It\'s is possible that the information within this article is now out of date or updated.

Last month a press release from AT&T announced a better customer experience by offering more live display units for customers to handle, which I was ecstatic about. Now, I just wish that all Best Buys would offer the same advantage within their mobile department. Today I managed to stumble across a newer Best Buy toting a mobile department, but was disappointed when I realized that there were no live units on display.  It’s interesting that just about every other department within Best Buy has live units of a variety of electronics from gaming consoles right down to GPS navigation systems. Maybe the lack of live units is a sign of the stand-alone Best Buy Mobile outlets expansion planned for later this fiscal year.

Best Buy plans to open 40 stand-alone Best Buy Mobile stores this fiscal year and will quintuple its share of the U.S. mobile phone market to 15 percent, the company said.  Brian Dunn, who formally took over the reins as CEO Wednesday from the retiring Brad Anderson, said mobile phones would be a key part of the company’s strategy of focusing on devices featuring “connectivity.”

Despite the Best Buy Mobile in Times Square, these mobile outlets have been slow to spread. There’s a huge value in not only being able to play with actual live mobile phones in stores, but also being able to walk a few more steps and demo phones from several other different carriers all in one place. One of the most annoying feelings is to have to hop from different carrier-specific stores for a hands-on experience with several different devices, so I’m still waiting for Best Buy to further expand on their solution.

  • I think stand-alone Best Buy phone stores make a lot of sense. There's a lot less inventory required (and therefore smaller spaces and rents). You could even open Best Buy Mobile kiosks in malls.

Best Buy is also hawking their mobile phone departments in TV ads, and those ads could help with the new stores by making Best Buy appear to be a good destination for mobile phones.

The one downside is whether they'll get hot mobile phones at the same time as the carrier stores. When I went to Best Buy after the Palm Pre launch, I figured I'd check out the Pre. Best Buy didn't have any in stock and sent me to the Sprint store (fortunately a short walk away).

Here in Canada there are rarely live units to demo on display. Just the empty dummy shells. If you ask at the front counter they always have a real one charged up and ready to go. That is, if it's not too busy.
