By now we have all heard about the Zune HD coming soon which uses Nvidia’s Tegra tech to drive the 720p-capable device. The catch is however that it will only output 720p with the AV dock. Engadget today is reporting that with the help of the free FileAid app they were out to test HD video on the iPhone 3GS. While it is clearly not ready for prime time, it is possible we could see the iPhone OS 3.1 update featuring HD video output to compete with the Zune HD. Hopefully Apple will do the smart thing and see the Zune’s 720p and raise them the extra pixels all the way up to 1080p. Maybe we’ll even get lucky and see them use HDMI to output the video.
Engadget’s tests were not successful in playing back video on the device because the software was too buggy but hopefully they’ll have this ready for OS 3.1
