GottaBeMobile has posted a video today about how and why you save money using a Kindle.

There is a lot of controversy lately after Amazon deleted copies of the book 1984 when the company found that this book was being sold illegally at Amazon. Should they have done that? The answer is no, that was a stupid decision. But still, I keep saying and repeating, the best gadget that I have ever bought is the Kindle. I’m more for a Social DRM than the traditional one, I have paid for my books and I feel that I should be free of reading it in any device I want. And currently you can’t do that with your books bought using the Kindle. So, I’m not saying that the Kindle is perfect but at least is the first step in the right direction.

Agree with your opinion of the Kindle. I am a gadget addict, and have purchased many gadgets that did not get much use after the original "newness" wore off. The Kindles have been one of my best gadget buys in a long time. Yes, I did use the plural for Kindle, I have all three models (told you I am a gadget addict). As I got older, it was difficult to read some books due to the small font size they used to limit the number of pages. With the Kindles, I set the font size to the largest size, and I can read for hours without any strain due to the large font, and display tech.

Another thing you try to avoid when getting older are stairs. My bedrooms are upstairs so going upstairs to retrieve the Kindle, and then going back downstairs was not in the cards. When the Kindle 2 was announced, and WhisperSync introduced, I preordered the Kindle 2. Now I have a Kindle downstairs as well, and WhisperSync keeps my reading location current at all times.

I was disappointed that Amazon introduced the Kindle DX so soon after the Kindle 2. I would definitley have waited for the Kindle DX for my second Kindle. When the DX was introduced, I did hesitate for a short while, but ultimately purchased it. The main reason for the DX is I use many PDF's, and the DX does a much better job rendering PDFs' than the Kindle 1, or 2.

Although an avid reader, I will never save enough on books to cover the cost of 3 Kindles. However, the large font, and WhisperSync make the purchases a good worthwhile for me.

The way to do e-book is the way Baen (http://www.baen.com/) does it.

    A) they are making money at it and B) their customers love it!

You can read reviews about the service at: http://www.amazon.com/Baen-Books/product-review...
  • That article says that Baen has 60 books for free. That works for authors who have more than one book, using the free eBook as a loss-leader to encourage people to buy your other books, but how about for authors just publishing their first book?

I also don't think that would work well for all of a publisher's books, though. They would probably like to make some money on eBook sales. :D

    Steve,
Just for clarification, most of Baen's eBooks are for sale individually and, I believe, by subscription. They also have dead tree editions.

As far as an author publishing their first book there is more than one way to skin that cat, for instance you could do it yourself. via the web. Lots of authors do that. C.J. Cherryh, Steven Brust, and Michael A. Stackpole (sorry, my reading genre is showing.) One of my favorite line from Mr. Stackpole - somewhat paraphrased, "I do tolerably well with my self-publishing on the web, it pays the mortgage."

Are you an aspiring writer or are your comments for discussions sake? Just curious.

  • Yes, I know Baen sells eBooks, too. I just don't suspect they'll give their entire library away. Your post seemed to want all Kindle books to be free. If that wasn't your intent, sorry....

As for being an aspiring writer, no; it was just for discussion. I wrote a couple of stories a long time ago (not published), but that's it. I don't think I'm an aspiring anything now. :D
