Strike Three: AT&T and Android Not Meant to Be?

closeThis post was published 2 months 30 days ago which may make its actuality or expire date not be valid anymore. This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding.

attandroid Hot on the heels of AT&T rejecting the Android based HTC Lancaster, the phone titan has now rejected cold two more Android phones in the final stages of development, both of these from Motorola, saying they were displeased with the final results. It is unclear if they were unhappy with the hardware, the Android software, the integration of the two, or any combination of the above.

It is interesting to note however that Ed Hansberry at Information Week is saying that both Moto Android handsets had originally been prototyped using Windows Mobile. Perhaps these are phones which were originally meant to be WinMo handsets but were flipped to Android when Moto became desperate chose to develop more Android offerings instead of Windows Mobile (Et Tu, Brutus?). If so, the integration or Android deployment may be less then what AT&T was hoping for.

Either way, this leaves AT&T without an Android phone after three tries, all rejected for mysterious reasons by the carrier giant. Am I just paranoid, but does anyone else see Apple’s hand behind this somewhere?

It is also a massive blow to Motorola, who has put all it’s eggs in an Android basket at this point. Moto has a major Android event coming up in conjunction with Verizon and T-Mobile. If they fail to make an impression there, then this really could be the end of Motorola, Hail Mary play with Android or no.

  • Given Gene Munster's recent analysis that Apple is almost surely going to open the iPhone to more carriers in the US within the next year - probably Verizon, when they start turning on their 4G network - no, I doubt that Apple was forcing AT&T to reject Android handsets.

I would like to think that it is not apple forcing its hand but it would not come as a shock. I am hoping that the hold out is for a good implementation of hardware/software, but that would be out of character for them to put out a well put together product.
