How about that? My computer provides caller ID for my phone. It even acts as a headset with my speakers and microphone!
I bet you’d love a feature like this, huh? Well I’m describing the process after the break…
First off, I must say that this is not guaranteed to work with all bluetooth drivers or software. I tried it on a few computers and one of them didn’t put out the sound to the speakers. So bear that in mind. This task is done using my BlackBerry Bold and HP Compaq nc8430 notebook running Windows XP SP3.
So lets get started.
The first thing you want to do is make sure your computer offers the Headset or Handsfree service. To do so, right-click the Bluetooth icon in your task bar and click Bluetooth Setup Wizard.
Check the box for “I want to configure the Bluetooth services that this computer will provide to remote devices.” Click Next
Now go through the services and find “Headset” and make sure it’s checked off. Then Click Next.
Click Next and click finish. If you haven’t already, pair your phone to your computer and make sure that the Headset or Handsfree service is listed in the service list for your computer. On Windows Mobile in the bluetooth screen, bring up the menu for your computer and check “Set as Hands-Free”.
Now Connect your phone to your computer. You should see this in your taskbar:
To make sure it worked, dial your phone from another line and you should hear a noise on your computer and see this:
Click that and see this:
And you can accept and take the call from your computer. Unfortunately, you can’t dial out or use voice recognition services, but it’s still a neat feature, no?
As I said, I can’t guarantee this will work everywhere. If you have trouble, post a comment and I MIGHT be able to help.
If anyone here uses Linux, check out nohands.sourceforge.net. It provides a nice app for doing this and even has a dialer. I tried it, and it worked out pretty well. But please, don’t comment asking for help on that.
