The venerable Trillian has been updated to version 4.0, aka Trillian Astra. It has been in private alpha/beta for about a year or so. Trillian has been my go to IM app on Windows (and very soon Leopard) since 3.1 Pro was released so many years ago.
Under the Windows platform, Astra has been in development since early 2006 and the GM version was finally released yesterday (Friday 8/14). I have been using this as my primary IM client through the private alpha/beta since I received my invite a little over 2 years ago. I found the beta versions to be stable and usable enough that I could declare it my primary IM app under Windows.
On the Mac OS, Trillian is still in a private testing phase and has been since it was announced in October 2007. For comparison, Windows GM is at build 117 and the Mac client is at build 8 and has not seen an update since December 2007 as development was put on hold and refocused to the Windows version.
However, what you all have been waiting for….the iPhone client! This iPhone app will be a must have for any iPhone user, even if you don’t use Trillian on your PC or Mac. This app has all the features you would expect from an app like this such as support for all major IM networks and push notifications. However, where the app really shines is with the desktop app integration. I really encourage you all to check out the Ad-Hoc beta announcement page which showcases all the features of the iPhone app. Since announcement, it has undergone quite a few revisions and is “nearly ready for submission to the App Store”. I unfortunately missed out on the private beta for the iPhone client but hopefully I’ll be able to get my hands on the App Store version soon.
