Late last week, I got a press release that CoPilot Live was launched for the iPhone. I wake up today to hear that Tom Tom has released their iPhone version as well. What surprised me was the price tags for each product. Both of these products have had a great deal of success on Pocket PC and WinMo devices over the years already so you’d expect a similar price point right? Wrong. Tom Tom is $100 where CoPilot Live is right around $35. That’s a big chunk of change. Well, let me add onto the table that Adam posted on iPhone.Mobilitysite last week to compare:

Name Price Monthly Fee
Tom Tom $99.99 N/A
CoPilot $34.99 N/A
Navigon $69.99 N/A
Sygic (US Only) $39.99 N/A
Sygic (North America) $79.99 N/A
AT&T Navigator Free $9.99 on AT&T bill

Yep. that’s a big difference in prices. Is the software that much better? I know that Adam and Jakerich are both checking out CoPilot already, so I will ask them to check out Tom Tom too. Engadget has a video of someone giving Tom Tom a spin already, check it out after the break.

  • Even better, CoPilot Live 8 on Windows Mobile is also just $35 (with an upgrade for $30). It used to be $100 or more.

I was a CoPilot user from versions 2 through 6, but switched to Garmin when ALK wanted about $100 to upgrade to version 7. I got Garmin Mobile XT with a Bluetooth GPS receiver for $120.

I always liked the CoPilot interface. However, their biggest problem was maps. I believe ALK does their own maps in the U.S. (they don't use Navtaq or TeleAtlas) and seem to rely a lot on user feedback. This can sometimes result in out-of-date maps.

On the plus side, whenever I submitted map updates, they were included in the next release.

Does iGO have an iPhone version? I've not heard of one.

UPDATE: Yes, I found it. $79.99 for the NA version.

They should have included iGo on this list too. Big omission.
