displaymedia.ashxIt was fairly obvious when we first saw the Palm Pre back in January that there would be a GSM version, what shocked most was that it wasn’t released first. Many in the blogosphere wondered if Palm’s decision to release the Pre on Sprint first, would be another blow to the struggling company.

Only time will tell, but after much waiting, the GSM Palm Pre is finally here!!! We have actual dates!!! Just not in the US unfortunately. O2 will be the exclusive operator for the handset in Europe, with launch dates of October 13 in Germany and the UK and Ireland  to see handset releases on the 16th.

O2’s press release indicates the handset will be available free with 2 year contract…wonder what it will take to ever see that kind of offering stateside, for a smartphone.

What does the GSM release mean to you? Are you excited? This writer certainly is!

UPDATE: Pre Central is reporting that the Pre’s have both EU and US UMTS/HSPA bands (@ least for AT&T.) It’s all up to the unlocking community now!

I would love to own a phone with WebOS, but frankly, the hardware housing it is simply atrocious. I am the type of guy who likes phones with great specs and great QWERTYs. The Pre has specs covered, but the QWERTY keyboard is horrible. The bubble-like covering and the small keys makes it incredibly uncomfortable to use.
  • This is awesome news! I can say right now that if the Palm Pre comes to AT&T, I'd fly into my nearest mobile store to buy it. I guess it's less likely that the Palm Eos will be released in October on AT&T, since all I see are WinMo 6.5 adverts, the more I'm looking forward to the possibility of an AT&T Palm Pre.
  • Hmm... wonder if I could grab one of these, unlock it and use it on AT&T or T-mob here. :) Well, I know I could, wonder if I should.
  • off course you should and let ME review it :)
  • Yes, you should. :P
