Project: Smartphone?

Palm4 There are certain reasons why I always used to love Palm, and one of the biggest was that they tended to think outside of the box, or at least in ways that most tech companies didn’t. For a long time this failed to be true while the company was in steep decline, but I am happy to see that sort of avant-garde, left brain sensibility beginning to return to Palm. Sure people say their ads for the Pre are cold or spooky but I feel they show a certain corporate character, making clear that Palm is not just another phone vendor. Just like Apple did way back when, Palm is taking some chances and trying to remake their public image.

That is why I love the fact that Palm took a booth at New York’s Fashion Week in Bryant Park, just to demo the new Palm Pixi smartphone. This makes excellent sense since the phone, while running WebOS, is heavily reminiscent of the Palm Centro which was very popular with women and more fashion-conscious buyers. This was also a great venue where they had the stage to themselves as Palm was the only tech sponsor exhibiting during the week long event. That must be a welcome change from the crowded, hype-infested trade shows and telecom conventions where such devices normally have to battle for every eyeball.

Intelligently, the booth focused on the Pixi Artist’s Series, in which several well known artists created limited edition designs for the phone’s back. The booth was decorated in the style of Cole Gerth’s "Hummingbird" design for the Artist’s Series.

Word is the phone was well received by the fashionistas, and the booth drew crowds. All I really want to know however is what did Tim Gunn think of it?

Check out some pics of the booth after the jump.

By day a department manager and writer for a major network device vendor...by night Zealot stalks the mean magnetic streets, striking fear into the hearts of bandwidth abusers and theme park mascots. Zealot has been involved with mobile devices for more than a decade now, starting off with dumb phones, moving to PDAs and then to smartphones, notebooks and netbooks with the odd PMP thrown in. Most of his mobile time currently is spent on a Treo Pro, Zune HD, Thinkpad T61, Gigabyte M912M or a Hackintoshed Compaq Mini 704. He proudly groks the Geek community and considers himself a Neo Maxi Zune Dweebie (thanks Will Wheaton!).

  • Selling smart phones to women at Fashion Week? Good idea.

Creepy androgynous woman as model in your commercial? Bad idea.

I still think Palm doing a spoof on the Mac vs. PC ads would be awesome.

    Palm: "I'm a Pre."
    Apple: "I'm an iPhone."
Palm: "Right now I'm running an IM chat, playing music and writing a blog post."
Apple: "Right now I'm chat.... Oops, I'm playing mus.... Oops, I'm writing a blog post."
Palm: "It's all about the multi-tasking, dude."

(If the iPhone can play music in the background while another app works, pick a different example.)
