Samsung Omnia Language packs. Do they really exist ?

Posted by Jack Cook on September 23, 2009 – 8:48 am  Share

omnia In an article on MobilityMinded, Mark Briggeman talked about an interesting discussion took place a few days ago in the Windows Mobile Forums where a user of the first Samsung Omnia (SGH-i900) asked if it was possible to change the language of his phone.

When ever a user asks if they can change the language, I always reply that you cannot but little did I know that there seems to be a way to do that with the Omnia.  It appears as if Samsung has overcome this and is offering Language Packs for several languages.

Mark points out that that the new Omnia 2 already has all the Language Packs in ROM. You can change your language to: French, Italian, German, Russian, Norwegian, Dutch, Czech, Greek, Spanish, Portuguese, Finnish, Danish, Polish and Swedish. I sure hope this becomes a standard for all devices!

  • Good for Samsung. I always thought it was stupid of Microsoft to lock a device into one language. I understand warranties are country-specific, but does the device have to language-specific?

Of course, there are hacks for other WM devices that let you change the language, usually involving running the boot loader to install a different ROM supporting the language you need, but those can brick your device and are of questionable legality (ROMs are probably subject to copyright, so where does somebody get the language-specific ROM?).
