Samsung Intrepid Review

This is a review of the Samsung Intrepid from Sprint.  Overall, I liked the phone.  It has a good build, and the software is impressive.  There were a few quirks here and there though.  …

Sign of the Times?

out-of-stock

I have heard wildly conflicting pictures regarding first day sales of the Zune HD. Lots of people are making statements on blogs and forums, but as we all know, there are lies, damn lies and anecdotal reports.

The above tweet from Microsoft, and many reports I have seen that stores sold out of their stocks of Zune HDs early on, sometimes to just the people waiting in line when the store opened (admittedly, in most cases stores got a dozen or two devices initially) are promising if true.

However, there are conflicting statements out there. A blogger at Geek.com said the Best Buy he went to was empty and the staff didn’t even know they had Zune HDs in stock (or what they were) until the blogger found the box for them in storage. The woman who bought mine for me at a Fry’s in California reported no problems, no shortage and no lines at 10AM (btw, the 32G Zune HD she bought for me is somewhere over the Atlantic on it’s way to Paris from Memphis, and should be in my hands tomorrow).

What’s the truth? Who knows, but I am reminded that Microsoft really ISN’T a hardware company and just isn’t as good at this whole Day of Release Event thing as certain other companies whose name rhymes with Mapple.

Did you buy a Zune HD on the release day (or try to)? If so, comment and tell us your story.

Some of the workers at my Best Buy didn't know anything about it. Also, it appeared I was the first one to buy it at 5:00 PM (since they weren't sure what the problem was with a serial issue, and since it was at least the first that cashier had checked out).

    Oh well, it's amazing. xP
  • It seems very much that it went on a store by store basis...some stores sold out immediately and had to send people across town to find one, others stacked them behind the printer paper and forgot they were there.

    Very strange.
  • I just had to post this somewhere, so why not here...

At PAX this year Wil Wheaton (while giving an award to Jonathan Coulton) coined the term "Neo Maxi Zune Dweebie".

    I REALLY want that on a t-shirt.

I don't know. When the XBox 360 came out, Microsoft had quite a release party planned. They've also had launch events for Windows, I believe (look at the TV commercials already for Windows 7).

So is this just a sign of the economic times or an indication of the Zune's place in the pecking order?

  • Good point. I have a feeling that there are large elements at MS that have the same reaction to the Zune as much of the tech press does, that is to say "Why bother, iPod wins". I have a feeling the only reason the Zune team was able to get the HD launched at all was as a way to perfect the UI towards use on other devices and as part of Windows Mobile in the future.

Still, a fantastic Proof of Concept.
  • Must report that I picked up my Zune HD in Edwardsville IL, none left on shelf but 10 at the customer service counter all with names on them being held. The Fairview heights, IL store was sold out completely when I started calling at 11:00 am yesterday.

My wife surprised me and bought me the black 16GB. Being the ungrateful husband I am (kidding), I took it back and bought the silver 32GB, but had to drive 30 miles to get it because the local BestBuy was sold out of the 32GB unit.

    Love it.
