There Can Be Only One: All Non-touch Zunes to be Discontinued

zune_latest_range1 Hot Zune news from the always reliable Paul Thurrott at his SuperSite

I met with the Zune folks today and one bit of information than I can discuss immediately is that the Zune HD will be the only device type going forward: The current Zune models, the Zune 8, 16 80, and 120, have all been discontinued. So if you want a classic Zune device, buy it now, as they’ll only be around while supplies last.

I know I am a bit biased, but I am not at all sure this is a great idea for Microsoft. However, considering the pressure Redmond has been under to ditch the Zune line altogether it is not surprising and focusing the line on the most likely models to be successful is understandable. It will also be a good way to avoid consumer confusion and make the best use of marketing money. While I love my Zune 80, I admit it really never made much of a dent in the market, certainly not the kind of dent that the HD is capable of.

So, if you wish a truly excellent high capacity MP3 player and the IPod Classic doesn’t speak to you (especially as this news may mean the higher capacity iPods will also be dropped on Sept 9th as the focus goes more and more to flash players), pick up a Zune 80 or 120 while you still can.

Hey, maybe you can get one at a discount while you pick up your new Zune HD, huh? I know I am going to try to get a cheap Zune 8 or 16 while they are available, just to have one.

  • It's probably a good thing, actually. Microsoft obviously has struggled with the "me-too" Zunes, so now why not focus on doing the HD "insanely great", as Apple might say, and then, with its success, use the brand equity established to reintroduce "regular" Zunes?
  • I can understand getting rid of the other flash-based Zunes, but not the hard disk ones. This means the largest Zune available will be 32 GB, right?

I think they should keep at least one high-capacity model around until they release a Zune HD with an HD (hard disk). Regardless of how nice the Zune HD is, if you can't fit your media on it, you'll probably keep your old one. If something happens to that, Microsoft is practically forcing people to switch to an iPod.
