Verizon Touch Pro 2 – Sold Out, Works as GSM, etc…

I don’t have to tell you how hot the HTC Touch Pro 2 is, I have been preaching this for 6 months. The proof is in the pudding though. The pudding is Verizon this time. They have already sold out of their version of the HTC Touch Pro 2. (link)

In addition to this, it seems that Verizon’s Touch Pro 2 can pull a hot magic trick. It can work on AT&T’s GSM network.  Chuong Nguyen from Pocketnow helped a friend unlock his Verizon phone so he could use it with GSM carriers when he is overseas. They tested out an AT&T sim and surprise… It works. The only issue is that 3G speeds cannot be obtained. It uses the same frequencies in GSM mode as a European model. Oh well. That makes it less worthwhile, but good to know anyhow. If you want to see how it’s done, head over to Chuong’s article.

  • Do you really need to "unlock" the Touch Pro 2 for overseas use? Many Verizon phones now ship as "world" phones (the Samsung i830, the BlackBerry 8830 or whatever, the Samsung Saga, etc.), using CDMA in the U.S. and allowing GSM out of the U.S. (or maybe North America).

To work in the U.S., you apparently do need to unlock the phone, though.

This really is a hot device. I had the chance to handle one yesterday and while I don't like the hard lines of the t-mobile version the screen and keyboard are amazing. I am not eligble for an upgrade until feb. but as soon as I can I will upgrade to the at&t version.
