Zune HD snags #2 spot on Amazon BestSellers

Zune HD is cruising to the top as it currently holds the #2 spot for amazon bestsellers. The only item edging out the zune currently is the 8 gig ipod touch, due to it’s sub-two hundred price drop.

      Just curious: why do you think that the Touch is outselling the Zune HD just because of the price drop?

      BUT… Read my reply on GDGT:
      Well, I like hearing this, but it's kind of tainted to be honest. I am a Zune Enthusiast and I want to see Zune do well, but the rankings are based on sales afaik and since Zune HD is only available for preorder from select retailers, Amazon's “Day of Release” delivery is appealing to many. I might be wrong, but I would be willing to bet most of Apple's iPhones, iPods, and Touches are sold retail and on their own site. Give it 2-3 weeks and Zune HD will definitely not be #1 on that list.

      It's back to number two. My point was not that it is amazing that the Zune is getting so much buzz – it is, in fact, still outselling the 32 GB iPod – but that it is a stretch to analyze the 8 GB Touch's sales level as being due to a price drop. My guess is that in the past that Apple sells 4 or 5 Touches for every Zune of any type (based on the sales total of 20 million in two years), so its appearance at the top of the sales list should not be attributed mostly to a drop in price.

      I truly hope that the Zune HD succeeds, at the very least in that it will force Apple to more aggressively improve the Touch and iTunes Store going forward (OLED displays, music subscriptions, etc.)
