SEC Sports - Official Application for SEC College Football, Basketball, and more

I am a huge SEC Football and Basketball fan. Down here in Alabama, football is a religion just like Hockey is for Canadians. The ESPN app is great and all, but SEC Sports is an app that is specifically designed for people like me, SEC Sports fans.

This is a paid app, but like most of them, it’s not much money… less than the cost of a popular song in the store and much more useful. When you start the app, you get a splash screen that seems to take 2-5 seconds to go away. My guess is that it’s preloading content into a cache or something. When the splash screen goes away, the application takes you to the news tab. Today’s news was great news, Alabama jumped Florida for the #1 spot in the AP Top 25. Yeehaw…

You click on the stories and you get a nice popup style interface to read or view the content. The far left tab is the scores tab. You can view all the scores from the previous weeks for the SEC. You can scroll down to view all the previous weeks.

One of the coolest parts of this app for those on the run is the video. SEC Sports video highlights, interviews, etc are all right here and the video is much better than I expected on the small screen.

The other tabs in the app are the standings, stats, and schedule tabs. The standings show the current SEC standings for both divisions within the SEC. The stats tab only shows team stats and not individual player stats. The schedule is pretty self explanatory right?

Finally, and probably the coolest little touch is the ability to choose your favorite team. Click the gear in upper right of most screens to choose your team. After you pick your team, your team’s logo will be in the upper left of all pages now. You see what I picked right?

Wrap Up

This is an awesome, informative app for SEC Sports fans. Well worth the 99 cent price, well worth it. The app, like many, is dependant on wifi or 3G connection. I would love to see a way to cache the content on the phone for airplane reading. For a 1st version of an app, I think they did a great job. I would like to see the Regions Bank ads gone, but I can deal with it. The only other wish is that the stats allowed for viewing individual player stats as well as team stats.

Pros:

  • Low cost
  • Very focused content for those that enjoy the subject
  • Well made

Cons:

  • Ads in a paid application are tacky
