I Am T-Pain

I bought and downloaded this one because of all the pub it was getting. I had to see if it was cool, even for a middle aged guy that doesn’t really care for T-Pain’s music. I want to say that my 16 year old daughter did enjoy it and rates it around a 4-4.5, but I didn’t like it as much and this is my review.

When you 1st start up the app, you are greeted with a quick splash screen that looks ok. Then a little warning/info screen telling us that we should use headphones and where to sing.

I went right into recording. I don’t like that. Let’s take a look at the different tabs the app has to offer. The 1st tab is the mic, this is where you record. The next tab is Tun3 which is where you configure the details of the autotuner. You can choose the T-Pain mode or turn it on custom and change the properties however you like.

You can turn the Auto-tune off with the big orange switch, choose the scale, and all. Then you have 4 preset buttons that you can save your custom setups to.

Next tab is the beats tab. This is where you select what music you want to sing along to. You can even choose to buy some of the more current hits too.

Once you choose a song and have your headphones on, you can hear the music in the background (without the words). It’s like karaoke. You sing along with the words that come across the screen. Once you are done recording, you can play your recordings in the play tab.

When you bring up a recording, you can interact with others by sending it via email or publishing it online to Facebook, Myspace, or Smule.

The help doesn’t go in too deep on how it works, but I found this video that shows the application wonderfully. It’s a well made application, but I don’t like it at all. It’s useless to me.

One note to give is that just talking into it really doesn’t give any real effect. You have to sing for the true impact of the program.

Wrap Up

This application is quite ground breaking and one of the most unique apps that I have encountered so far. That goes a long way in my opinion of the app. While I admit, that it’s useless to me, not even trivial fun, I can see where many would like it. The price is not bad at all, but really, what apps are overpriced? None? Well, except for some of the silly ones just pricing high
for giggles.

I am going to go for an average of my take and my daughter’s to give this a 3.5 of 5. It’s definitely a trivial app, but it did entertain my daughter for an hour.

Pros:

  • Innovative
  • Online sharing of music output is cool
  • Big, Famous name pushing it helps

Cons:

  • No real use other than a short amount of entertainment.
