This is a simple application that is very helpful and an essential for someone on the road a lot. It’s already helped me out in a couple cities in the month I have been using the iPhone (again).

AroundMe allows you to quickly find out information about your surroundings. How many times have you found yourself in need of finding the closest Gas Station?

AroundMe quickly identifies your position and allows you to choose the nearest Bank, Bar, Gas Station, Hospital, Hotel, Movie Theatre, Restaurant, Supermarket, Theatre and Taxi.

AroundMe shows you a complete list of all the businesses in the category you have tapped on along with the distance from where you are.

I am fairly sure that it doesn’t get any easier than this. You pick the type POI you are looking for and pow, you are looking at a list near you. The app displays the POIs and has the closest locations up top.

If you click on one of the listings, a map pops up next. The app uses Google Maps to find and display the information. It opens the maps within the application.  From the map, you have tons of options. In the middle is what the data looks like when you mail it to someone. The right hand screen shows the information about the POI.

From this map, you have several options as I mentioned about. The phone icon brings up the phone number and gives you an option to call. The “+” icon allows you to place the POI as a contact or favorite. The icon on the far right is the fun icon, it allows you to show the route, post the POI on Twitter or Facebook.

More from the main screen: The weather option from the main screen bring up a nice weather forecast for the next couple days. You can also search for POIs by name or zip code.

The settings menu lets you change the unit of measurement and the theme of the application.

Wrap Up

It’s a simple application that gets right to the point. It searches for POI (points of interest) near where you are as indicated by your GPS coordinates. You might wonder why a single app for finding POIs, but this app is quicker to get strait to the point with than a “GPS App” and a lot cheaper. You have to have a 3G or better to get the most out of this app. You need the GPS and obviously a good, fast connection.

Like I said, it’s free, it’s simple, and very useful. I highly recommend it.

Pros:

  • Super Fast
  • Very Simple to navigate through
  • Free, but with a price (ads)

Cons:

  • Ad supported. I would pay a couple bucks to turn off ads.

Price : Free
