85% of Mac users own a PC

thumbnailThe statistics come from the research firm NPD Group and they were published recently at The Inquirer page.

This means that 85 per cent of Mac users have a pragmatic approach to their machines and use the best tool for the job at hand, whatever they want when they want it.

The study also revealed what I always suspected, the average household income of those with Macs was around $100,000 and having a Mac was a status symbol. That probably explain why 85% of them also have a PC, Symbols sometime are not enough to live in current modern world controlled by PCs.

Yeah, and then there are those who virtualize if they ever REALLY NEED to use Windoze rather than having a whole second box around for those infrequent moments.
  • I think those would be counted in the 15% of Mac users who don't own PCs, though. The article was about "owning PCs", not "using Windows".

And at least Microsoft lets you virtualize. Let's see if Apple ever does that. (I won't hold my breath....)

  • I wonder if they mean Macs or computers running Mac software? I am PC through and through but I have a hackintoshed netbook running Mac OS X just to play with and test.

Would I count as a Mac household? 5 Windows PCs and 1 Hackintosh? One Ubuntu as well, does that skew anything?

    I love surveys.

I wonder which they bought first - PC or Mac? ie:

    1) Bought a PC, realised it crashed all the time, got viruses, blue screens and full of bloatware or,
    2) got a Mac first then realised they had to get a PC to run... um.. ?

    ;)
  • That's a good question and cuts to the heart of the original article and doog's reply. I wish they had included that in the survey.

There is an alternate explanation. It could be that, like me, more and more people are slowly switching from Windows to Mac. When I bought my first Mac, we still had three PCs running Windows. Now we have five Macs - we stopped using Windows completely in June, when we upgraded my daughter's laptop. There is still one PC that runs Ubuntu - it is my spare, in case my laptop breaks - and, technically, there is still that one laptop with a broken hinge that runs Windows (which is the one that I replaced with that first Macbook), but it hasn't been turned on in two years.

Im not suggesting that the world is all switching to Mac, but they are now in 12% of US households - that's up 3% in one year.

Also, quick correction, the article does not say that the average Mac owner has an income of $100,000 - it says that 36% of Mac owners have incomes of more than $100,000, which is quite different.

    Good catch!

  • Five Macs? Either you married the Octomom or really like Jobs' Kool-Aid. :D

  • Well, Schmidt DID leave an opening on the board...
