google-maps-navigation Wow. This is going to be a huge blow to stand alone GPS makers and software companies. Google announced Google Maps Navigation today.

Today we’re excited to announce the next step for Google Maps for mobile: Google Maps Navigation (Beta) for Android 2.0 devices.

This new feature comes with everything you’d expect to find in a GPS navigation system, like 3D views, turn-by-turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting. But unlike most navigation systems, Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up to take advantage of your phone’s Internet connection.

This is initially going to be US only and 1st comes to Android 2.0, but the buzz says that versions for iPhone and Windows Mobile are in the works. I’ll believe that when I see it. Check out a demo video courtesy of Google after the jump…

I don't think it will hurt the stand-alone GPS vendors much (the ones that have pre-installed or installable maps). It may hurt the carriers' GPS business (and Telenav), though, as those have maps delivered wirelessly.

However, if it doesn't speak your turns (not necessarily street names, but directions) or do automatic rerouting, I probably would only use it in a pinch.
