This site is not responsible for any misunderstanding. So, this morning Chris posted his thoughts on his iPhone apps. I’d like to add to that a bit with 5 of my favorites. This list is by no means inclusive or exclusive and there are LOTS of apps I like on the platform but this is 5 of them in some of the more popular categories.
Top Twitter app: Twitteriffic. Hands. Down. Best. App. I’m waiting to see what happens with Tweetie 2 as I may switch back to Tweetie once the new version comes out but as of right now, Twitteriffic is my go-to app.
Top Sports app: ESPN ScoreCenter. Chris graded this as a C+ and I think I’d have to disagree with this grade. I’d give it a strong B+/A-. For me it used to be an A+ app until they started putting ads in at the bottom of the “cards”. The one thing that floored me was the seamless integration with my ESPN.com account. All my favorite teams and sports were automatically downloaded as “cards” into the app and was ready for me to use with little to no setup. The only way this could get better is with push notifications of score updates.
Top Social Networking and IM apps: Facebook. They really nailed the new 3.0 update and the only thing that is lacking is push notifications for messages. Ideally, it would push inbox and chat messages but I’ll take whatever I can get. At this point, I have chat turned off in the Facebook app and I use BeeJive for all my IM needs. Yes, BeeJive is $9.99 but it is one of the few $9.99 apps that are worth it. The only networks missing for me are Skype and Pronto. For those who don’t know, Pronto is an IM app made by a company called Wimba that is designed for use by colleges that will integrate with Blackboard and give you the ability to easily chat with classmates without having to trade screen names for the various networks.
Top “Utility” App: Cardstar. I’ll have more on this app later today as they recently updated and there are some new features to share.
Top Jailbreak app: Backgrounder (with Kirikae). This solves the biggest remaining complaint to the iPhone OS. The way mine is set up, simply holding the home button until a “Backgrounding Enabled” notification pops up allows me to send an app to the background so I can run another app. For example, I can listen to Pandora while writing a new post with the WordPress app. A short hold of the power button lets me swap apps without even having to return to the home screen.
