Well, apparently Verizon heard my plaintive cries, and just finished an event at New York’s Uber-classy W hotel to announce the Droid officially. It appears that someone messed up with the countdown…or they just figured holding the event close to when the countdown ended would be close enough.
Anyway, doesn’t matter, Verizon, I forgive you…kisskiss…Now I have some information from the event. Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha and Verizon Wireless CMO John Stratton were both on stage. First of all there was no sign of the Eris, but it was confirmed that there would be several phones in the Droid family.
It was also confirmed that the Moto Droid will be released on November 6th…just a week away.
More Droid goodness after the jump.
Specs are pretty much as we knew…
- 3.7″ display
- Android 2.0
- Wi-Fi
- Bluetooth
- 5.0 megapixel camera with DVD-quality video
- 16 GB memory
Price will be $199 as leaked, with standard data plans.
Stratton promised the largest marketing campaign in Verizon’s history to back up the Droid, and regarding future plans, he said…
“Our initial device is Droid, so this is kind of the cornerstone, but we will expect over time that the partnership between Verizon and Google will be a multi-year partnership.”
It seems that Verizon and Motorola have different views of the Droid’s focus…Stratton said the target market is 15 to 35 year olds, heavy mobile data and social network users, mostly male due to the size of the device. Jha however stressed that the Droid was an enterprise device. It will be interesting to see if, unlike the iPhone, it can do both.
There was lots of talk about a “new Motorola”, and Jha stated that Moto will be producing at least 20 smartphones in 2010, I assume all running Android. Stratton restated the obvious that Verizon took a big risk going with Motorola on this project.
According to Verizon if you preregister at www.droiddoes.com, you will take delivery of the phone on Nov 6th.
