That encoded countdown ticking down on the www.droiddoes.com site advertising Verizon’s upcoming release of the Motorola Droid is so cool. What a brilliant marketing gambit. Really clever that they gave no statement of what it was for, or what it was doing, or even what the symbols meant. So freaky and mysterious.
It got a lot of people interested and involved until it was cracked by some clever enthusiasts who confirmed it was absolutely counting down to one AM on October 30th. That REALLY generated some nice buzz and excitement for the release, great marketing job!
One problem, though….
…the Countdown has stopped.
It reached the end a day or so early, showing a line of the little “zero” figures (some call it the “ducky”, others the “girl with a machine gun”). Frozen there. Boom.
Countdown over.
But nothing happened.
Zilcho.
Bupkus.
All we have is a rumor that the Droid will be the name of a whole line of Verizon Android based phones, that the Moto Droid will just be the flagship. A second, the HTC Droid Eris (a reworked Hero) has already been announced, running Android 1.6. The rumor is now that both the Moto Droid and the Eris will be released November 6th. Will Android 2.0 be ready by then? Why issue phones with two different versions of Android out of the box?
Is that all?
Why go to all that trouble with the countdown and not even make a freakin’ announcement?
WHY RUN THE COOL GEEKY ENCRYPTED COUNTDOWN JUST TO BREAK OUR HEARTS??????
DDAMMMNNNNNN YYOOUUUUUUU VERIZONNNNNNNNN!!!!!!1111111
…
Now if you will all pardon me, I am going into the basement to cry.
