Moto Droid, Our New Gadget Overlord?

Posted by Zealot on October 21, 2009 – 5:01 am  Share

verizon-droid Boy Genius Report got it’s hands on the promotional mailers that are going out to continue the marketing campaign to introduce Verizon’s new Android-wielding juggernaut the Motorola Droid.

Needless to say they are sticking with the “menacing robot that does things the iPhone can’t” approach which has already piqued so much interest and gotten so many people excited. I wonder how this campaign is playing in the non-geek community? Do people want their phone to glare at them with an angry red eye? By an large, I admit I try to avoid products and people that can be described with lines like “It hears. It knows.” I imagine the next TV spots will include Motorola Droids crushing human skulls and iPhones beneath their steel feet, or using an Android app to control the weak minded fools in your office using microwaves.

And what is up with that “It’s not your next phone. It’s the one after that.” line? Isn’t the Droid supposed to be just a couple weeks away from release? What IS our next phone supposed to be then? Am I missing some delicate nuance?

Either way I am still loving the approach and hope they stick with it. At the very least, it is fascinating to see if it will work.

I wondered about that, too. I think it's trying to convey something about how advanced the phone is, but somebody seems to have missed the "you can't buy it for a while" connotations.

I think something like "the phone of tomorrow, today" would be better (but maybe too trite).
