motorola-windows-mobile-logo After being one of the flagship Windows Mobile vendors just a year or two ago, Motorola is not releasing a SINGLE Windows Mobile 6.5 handset, despite the fact that nearly every other major vendor is releasing at least one. A spokesman for Moto is saying that they are waiting for Windows Mobile 7 but I am somewhat dubious that they will be able to make the jump directly from 6.1 (on the Moto Q9c) to 7, especially as their entire focus is now on Android and they are rumored to have jettisoned their entire WinMo development team in recent layoffs.

While I can understand that they view this as putting 110 percent behind the Cliq and upcoming Android handsets, some analogy about eggs and baskets keeps coming to mind. On top of that, this seems like a pretty high handed move by a company that is two steps away from abject financial humiliation and receivership. The fact that early hands on reports on the Cliq have been less then stellar certain doesn’t help.

However, Moto does seem to be attracting lots of help for the Android phones, including a number of somewhat B-list “partners” who are making applications for them.

In their press release about their new “Ecosystem Partners”, Moto lists some of their new best friends..

Signature applications are designed to help consumers personalize their phones so that their experience is uniquely tailored to their lifestyle. With Android-powered Motorola devices, like the recently announced Motorola CLIQ™ with MOTOBLUR™, consumers will be able to access content, multi-media offerings and stay connected through applications from partners such as Accuweather, Amazon MP3, Barnes & Noble, CardStar, Comcast Entertainment Group, Hands On Mobile, Howcast.com, Midomi, MySpace, QuickOffice, QuickPlay Media, RJDJ, Superpages.com, and Travel Channel.

So MySpace but not Facebook, no sign of Twitter, Amazon for music but not ebooks, Barnes and Noble instead, QuickOffice not Documents to Go…am I alone in being underwhelmed by this Ecosystem?

Zealot has been involved with mobile devices for more than a decade now, starting off with dumb phones, moving to PDAs and then to smartphones, notebooks and netbooks with the odd PMP thrown in. Most of his mobile time currently is spent on a Treo Pro, Zune HD, Thinkpad T61, Gigabyte M912M or a Hackintoshed Compaq Mini 704. He proudly groks the Geek community and considers himself a Neo Maxi Zune Dweebie (thanks Will Wheaton!).
