Mac OS X is not much better than W7

Posted by ctitanic on October 8, 2009 – 4:16 pm  Share

I’m not the one saying it, he is Walt Mossberg, the man behind the Personal Technology Column of The Wall Street Journal.  And here is exactly what he said:

In recent years, I, like many other reviewers, have argued that Apple’s Mac OS X operating system is much better than Windows. That’s no longer true. I still give the Mac OS a slight edge because it has a much easier and cheaper upgrade path; more built-in software programs; and far less vulnerability to viruses and other malicious software, which are overwhelmingly built to run on Windows.

Now, however, it’s much more of a toss-up between the two rivals. Windows 7 beats the Mac OS in some areas, such as better previews and navigation right from the taskbar, easier organization of open windows on the desktop and touch-screen capabilities. So Apple will have to scramble now that the gift of a flawed Vista has been replaced with a reliable, elegant version of Windows.

Since the first beta I have been saying that this version 7 is the best thing Microsoft has released in a long time so it does not surprise me to read such comment coming from Walt Mossberg. Now prepare yourself for the Mac fanboys reactions we will have a lot of fun in the next few days.

I find it odd that Walt praised Windows 7 so highly. I have been running 7 exclusively since the beta because of problems with XP sp3 and drivers on my wifes computer and it is the best thisn I have used in a long time.

Is Mossberg confusing cause and effect here? Is the Mac OS inherently less vulnerable to malware, or are there just fewer viruses due to its lower marketshare?

One of Mozilla/Firefox's early claims was that it was less vulnerable to malware than IE, but as it became more popular, malware authors began to target it more. I even seem to recall reading that it had more security bugs at one point than IE (although whether that was because more people were checking due it being open source is unknown; also, speed to fixing isn't taken into account).

Regardless, hackers are trying to exploit Macs.

I thought Mossberg was a Mac fanboy. :D

  • The fact that Mossberg said that is simply incredible..I expect to go outside and find it raining purple hedgehogs. This is real "end of thr world" type stuff.

Of course this means it is a good deal better than "almost as good as Mac OS X" since the only reason he would have said that is if Windows 7 is SO good that if he didn't praise it at least that much, he would lose all credibility he has left.

  • I agree with this. Windows 7 is a great improvement over Vista, and compared to a Mac, I'd rather use Windows 7. The new taskbar is a nice enhancement, and just misses the "copying Apple" point, which is good. Plus the jump lists are the most convenient feature of the OS. This has got to be their best OS since Win2k. I'm running the RTM version as my main OS on my laptop.
