Since joining the “Dark Side”, I have been looking at a lot of applications. I dove in heads first too. I have spent over $100 on apps so far. Not that I needed most of them, but I just want to see what’s out there. I have noticed that a lot of my favorite companies that I have known and respected for years have ported some of their apps to the iPhone. I judged the Pocket PC and Smartphone magazine software awards a few times and many of them were perennial contenders. Some of them were big supporters of Aximsite and eventually Mobilitysite too. I decided to showcase those companies and inform my fellow “Former WinMo" users about their existence.
Let’s get started. These are my favorite Windows Mobile Software companies that have gone iPhone as well. They are in no particular order.
DDH Software
DDH is famous for their HanDbase database manager. HanDBase is a database manager that allows you to make databases for whatever you want to track. It has desktop software that accompanies the application as well. They have gone iPhone with HanDbase.
WebIs
The creator of Pocket Informant, one of the most successful and powerful organization programs for Windows Mobile, has gone iPhone. They have ported Pocket Informant to the iPhone as well as adding Note2self and Deepfish. Note2self is a simple voice recorder and DeepFish has helps you sync your IMAP-based email accounts.
SPB Software House
SPB is a surprise to me. They are very embedded into the Windows Mobile community and continue to pump out awesome Windows Mobile apps, in fact, they just released the awesome SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 a couple weeks ago. I would love to see SPB crack the core of iPhone and make a Mobile Shell for iPhone too. SPB has ported SPB Wallet and SPB Brain Evolution to the iPhone.
Astraware
Oh Astraware, how I love you. Astraware along with PDA Mill, were my very favorite Windows Mobile game makers. Astraware has pushed out many iPhone games already. My Little Tank, GTS World Racing, Phaze, Westward, Astraware Casino, and more. GTS was one of my favorite racing games. I think it will be one of my first purchases.

ilium Software
The creator of eWallet, my favorite application for storing passwords and credit cards ever. Yes, eWallet has been ported to the iPhone. ilium is also the maker of some other fine iPhone apps as well. They have Apples2Oranges, an awesome looking conversion program and King’s Corner.

SBSH Software
Another wallet program, Safewallet. SBSH is very popular in the Windows Mobile world for their Pocket Breeze and PocketWeather apps. They don’t seem to have jumped in to the iPhone punch quite yet with just one title in the app store, but one is enough right?
Vito Technology
Vito is a company that surprised me to find out that they are dabbling in iPhone apps now. They are called Vito Technology, but they rebranded a little for Windows Mobile apps and showcase them at Ilovewindowsmobile.com now. Vito has been knows for many apps over the years in the WinMo world, but Winterface is the most successful I think. Winterface kind of sounds like Winterspring huh? Anyhow, Vito Technology has a few iPhone apps out and Task2Gather looks to me like the nicest.

PDA Mill
I am very pleased to say that PDA Mill is all in. They have most of their hottest games ported to the iPhone. I am going to be purchasing Snails today. What’s even cooler is that most of their hits back on PPC are now free on the iPhone. Gamebox Gems would keep me entertained for hours. Back to Snails, this game won award after award after award. I hope it’s still good. Fun stuff. If you are looking for a role playing style game, Arvale was one of the best you could find on Windows Mobile. They are offering Arvale and Arvale 2 for the iPhone. I recommend checking them out.
D
eveloperOne
These guys are the creator’s of Agenda Fusion, iFitOne, and Code Wallet and more. They aren’t showcasing any iPhone apps quite yet, but at the very bottom of their home page, it reads, “iPhone and iPod Touch Applications coming soon!”.
I have had a great time growing up with the mobile phone industry and having a chance to watch these companies grow. Most of the developers I mentioned above started out mainly developing for Pocket PC and eventually Windows Mobile. At first glance, I felt that their making iPhone apps instead of WinMo was kind of a sell out, but looking back, they just made smart choices. The iPhone software infrastructure is much better than the Windows Mobile market right now, but don’t count Microsoft out. The Marketplace will be great for Windows Mobile and there are 1000’s of great apps for Windows Mobile too, they are just scattered all over the damn place.
Thanks for reading and if you loved these companies back when you had a Dell Axim or an HTC Fuze, you might want to consider supporting them today as well.
