Android’s Motus Operandi or X10

During the gaping silence from AT&T regarding all things Android, there has been a small admittance to the end of the iPhone exclusivity to AT&T, yet Android seems to be overtaking market. Sprint has launched the HTC Hero, T-Mobile currently has the myTouch 3G, and Verizon debuted the Motorola Droid and Eris, so I’m wondering if with Sony Ericsson X10 will grace AT&T before the rumored Motorola Motus. Sony Style stores started offering AT&T service with their handsets on November 19th, so it wouldn’t be a huge leap for both Sony and AT&T to follow the same path for the X10. And then Motus makes the scene again this week for the first time since it passed through the FCC in late October with a blurry photo op and interesting AT&T-compatible specs:

  • 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A motorola-motus
  • 512 MB ROM
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 3.1 inch display 320 x 480 (HVGA)
  • 5 megapixel camera with LED flash
  • WiFi / Bluetooth 2.0 / GPS
  • OS Android 1.5 with Motoblur
  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900 W-CDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100
  • Reverse flip keyboard
  • Rear directional touchpad

Meanwhile, the Sony Ericsson X10 page has been updated with details about bands compatible with both the T-Mobile and AT&T networks. Android handsets have been presented to AT&T before but were  rejected, so maybe the carrier was looking for just the right Android device or devices to come along.

AT&T has been silent about Android for long enough that they’re the only major carrier who does not have one of the most cutting edge mobile operating systems running on any of their handsets. The Korean manufacturer, HTC, continues to offer AT&T Windows Mobile options that run the possibility of not being upgradable to Windows Mobile 7. I’d have more faith if all of the current Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets would be running more powerful processors, like the 1 GHz Snapdragon, but that continues to not be the case.

Either way, it looks like Q1 in 2010 will at least reveal where the Motorola Motus end up with its rear directional touchpad, and if AT&T will finally give its customers an Android option  with the Motus or X10 after toting the iPhone alongside Windows Mobile handsets alone for far too long.
