I recently fixed my BlackBerry Bold and am now gonna start posting BlackBerry stuff again. And I’m going to start off with a tutorial on how to activate the Internet Browser as the default instead of MEdia Net and WAP.
This tutorial is aimed at those with an AT&T BlackBerry who have upgraded to a leaked OS 5.0 and find they are stuck with MEdia Net as the default browser, which means they can’t change the homepage, set the identity, or search from the address page, among other things.
The tutorial is after the break.
There are a bunch of tutorials for this “Browser fix” out there, but I have yet to see one that does it with BlackBerry Master Control Program (MCP for short). So I’m writing on how to do this.
AS WITH ANY PROCEDURE, PLEASE BACK UP YOUR BLACKBERRY BEFORE PROCEEDING!! THIS TUTORIAL, IF NOT FOLLOWED CORRECTLY, COULD MESS UP YOUR BERRY!! SO BACK IT UP!
ALSO, DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! I’M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU SCREW UP!! THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE EXACTLY AS I DID THEM!!
Download MCP from here. Install and start it up. If you run Vista or 7, be sure to run it as an administrator.
This is the main screen. In the drop box under Device PIN, select your device from the list and enter the password if you have one set.
Click on the icon that looks like a folder with a clock and arrow over it, and click ‘Retrieve’ under list management. After a few seconds, the modules on the Berry will be listed in the box to the right.
Select ‘net_rim_bb_browser_daemon’. Under ‘Operations’ make sure ‘Create ALX/JAD’ is unchecked and click save.
Next, in the left panel, click the red box with the up pointing arrow. In the list, select the ‘net_rim_bb_browser_daemon’. Under ‘Operations’, check off the ‘Force’ box and click Erase. Your device will reboot. Wait for it to start up. Once it does, start up Desktop Manager and go to Backup/Restore > Advanced Restore. Also, download and save this file to your desktop. This is the file for the AT&T service books.
In Advanced Restore, click File > Open and choose the file you just downloaded. When it loads into the left box, click the >> button and click yes when it asks about overwriting.
Back to MCP in the left panel, click the blue square with the arrow pointing down, and click ‘COD/JAD’. In the open dialog, locate the file called ‘net_rim_bb_browser_daemon.cod’. Under Execute, click Load. Once again, let the device reboot. Go ahead and disconnect your Berry and close MCP. When the device reloads, go to ‘Personal Email Setup’ in the Settings folder, log in, press the menu button, and select Service Books. Click Send Service Books.
If you did everything right, you should be able to browse on the regular BlackBerry Browser, and not fixed to the WAP MEdia Net.
Once again, these directions are provided as is. This is how I did it. I am not responsible for your lack of attention to the directions. If you screw up, you weren’t doing something right. I’m not responsible.
