Could Any Network Have Been Ready For the iPhone?

Posted by Stephen Borders on November 6, 2009 – 8:16 am  Share

zatt We have all heard the complaints about at&ts data network. So I was reading the Tech News over on Yahoo and I saw this article talking about at&t and how they offer different plans for different cities in an effort to help out with its Data Network problem and noticed this statement made by John Donovan the Chief Technology Officer for at&t:

“If a network is not fully loaded, it’s hard to know exactly how much demand is out there,” Donovan said. “You put all you can in the ground, and they eat it all up, and then you put more in there, and they eat it all up.”

The explosive growth in use of mobile data, which Donovan said has risen 4,932 percent at AT&T over the past 12 quarters, or in other words three years, has forced the carrier to throw out its traditional planning models, he said.

So my question is, could anyone’s network have been prepared for a 5000% increase in data traffic? What do you think?

I think Sprint or Verizon may have faired better (but not much) as they both have a large network just as AT&T does, but AT&T was alone in tower technology (GSM). When they are full, they are stuck. Sprint and Verizon could have benefited from redundant towers in some areas (CDMA) and they could have covered peak demand by drawing from other each others towers. Maybe I am just crazy.
  • Definitely not. It doesn't matter which carrier got the iPhone, that company would be getting hammered right now by everyone. I honestly think Sprint and T-Mo would it even worse too.
