Ebooks: The Readius Gets a Second Chance
Borders, you ignored me at your own peril. I had suggested that Borders, the second largest Book Seller in the US, purchase and rebrand Polymer Vision’s Readius device, an Ebook Reader that was truly ahead of it’s time. Polymer Vision actually got a prototype of the device together, based on an innovative flexible e-paper screen, before running out of money and going bankrupt. The Ebook market just wasn’t developed enough to allow investors to see the possibilities in the Readius.
However, last month Polymer Vision’s last remaining assets, the technology behind and rights to the Readius, were bought by Wistron. According to Brian Chong, chief of product planning, the company is currently developing a 5- to 6-inch handheld device similar to the Readius that will use the same style of rolled, extendable e-paper display.
Chong says that the device will be launched sometime in 2010…and I can’t wait.
