I am always on the look out for some quality earbuds. I hate to admit it, but I am very hard on them and often destroy them working in the yard. The only set of earbuds I haven’t killed is my Ultimate Ears Superfi 5pro earbuds. I only use them on trips now. I don’t mean to destroy them, but when you get out there jamming while cutting the grass and all, things happen.

I was recently given a set of iFrogz Timbre Earbuds to check out. These are a little different as they are meant to work with the iPhone. They have a microphone for calls as well as a button to control your media without touching the iPhone. They worked out pretty well.

EarPollution Timbre noise isolating earbuds sport a natural wood-chamber and offer superb sound quality with a classy look as well as a high definition microphone to support iPhone and most Blackberry models. Timbre earbuds feature clean bass and you guessed it, outstanding audio "timbre" as well. Each pair comes with three earfit pieces for ultimate comfort and ambient noise control.

  • Driver unit: 10 mm
  • Impedance: 16 ohms
  • Sensitivity: 103 dB
  • Frequency Response: 20 Hz to 20Khz
  • Cord Length: 1.1 m
  • Plug: 3.5 mm

The iFrogz Timbre earbuds are labeled left and right for your convenience and these labels are imprinted on actual wooden chambers. My guess is that the wood is instrumental in putting out some solid lows that I experienced while testing these. They come with several sized rubber inserts for maximum noise isolation. They also serve well to allow people with smaller ears to enjoy them. The ones that came equipped did fine for me, but my wife needed the smaller size.

The wood chamber mates up with a nice brush aluminum fitting that the inserts fit over. The 3.5mm jack is constructed with an aluminum plug matching the earbuds themselves.

I had no issues jacking into the iPhone 3GS or the original iPhone.

The sound quality with music was mind blowing at this price point. At full volume on bass heavy music, I experienced a little clamping, but between 1/2 and 3/4 volume, these rocked me just fine. The bass response was very surprising for a low cost pair of earbuds. I have had several $79 – $99 earbuds that didn’t produce lows as rich as these. The highs were fine and like I said, between 1/2 and 3/4 volume on all genres of music I listen to, they sounds great. I am far from an audiophile, but I do know what I hear and these sound good.

The call quality of the microphone was good enough. I talked with several people with it and 2 of the 3 thought I sounded just fine. The other guy thought I sounded too muffled. On all the calls, they sounded great.

One last feature I want to mention is the controls. The capsule inline with the right hand earbud houses the microphone and only has iFrogz written on it. There is no clear indication that there are controls in there. The micro switch button is inside this plastic capsule. You can squeeze this capsule to play/pause or receive/end calls as well as advance a playlist when listening to music in your library.

Conclusion
These earbuds cost $49.99 with the microphone adn $39.99 without. This is a good price for the sound quality of music in my opinion. They are priced right and probably the best I have listened to in this price range. The bass response at most volumes is great.

Pros:

  • Nice looking
  • Great fit
  • Great sound and most levels / amazing lows
  • Priced competitively for the quality

Cons:

  • Rubber cord gets tangled up too easily. I’d like to see the cord in a fabric or more rigid rubber in the future.
  • At max volume the quality degrades considerably.

Overall Rating: 4/5
