tilt2

Well I had to send the Pure back and I must say, other than not having a hardware keyboard it was one of the best Smartphones I have used. However to help get over it I now have in my possession the Tilt2 and I must say it is a wonderful piece of hardware. I will be doing a full review later, but I wanted to post some first impressions of the device. Although it is larger than my Tilt and much larger than the Pure it feels good in my hand and has the best slide out keyboard I have ever used. The large 3.6 inch screen is beautiful it is easy to read even outside. It is heavy but not too much so and it truly looks like a professional device. I am also enjoying the menu improvements of WM 6.5 although it does lag a bit here and there. So for you the readers, it there is anything you would like to know about the Tilt2, WM6.5 or a piece of software you would like to know if it runs on it, please post it in the comments.

From my understanding a lot of it is links to trial ware and can be deleted, but there is so much space it really doesn't matter. I would try but this is not mine (though I reall wish they would forget I have it) but when I can upgrade and get one of my own I will be working to remove it.

I love my Tilt 2. (Upgraded from a Tilt) The only problem I have is that you can't uninstall all the crapware that AT&T put on it. (Trial version of games that you can't uninstall?)

Unless I can find a way to uninstall, I'll probably flash a new ROM in the next week or 2. Any suggestions on either an uninstall hack or a recommended ROM? (with TF3D 2.1 or 2.5)
  • There are really three types of pre-installed software, IMHO:

    1. Value add software (like my Samsung Omnia's RSS, podcast and business card scanning software). I hope you don't really object to that. If you don't find it useful, that's fine, but others may.

    2. Trialware third-parties got included on the device. I view that like advertising on TV. The fees the OEM gets to include the software may help keep prices down (increasing the subsidy on the phone).

    3. Carrier-specific software to entice you to use their services. This is perhaps the only software I might object to, but I can hardly blame a company for wanting to advertise their own services.

Regardless, it's not a big deal if it's set up correctly. If they install the software in the ROM image and keep the executables in the Windows folder, the "crapware" shouldn't hurt you at all.

Unless things have changed since I worked at a Pocket PC OEM, files in the Windows folder can be kept in ROM, so they won't use any user-available storage or RAM unless they're executed. So even if you could uninstall them, you wouldn't get any additional storage or RAM back.

If you don't like seeing the links, delete them. If something is actually running my default, remove any links to it from the Startup folder.

It's like people whining about bloatware on PCs. Unless it actually starts up, it's not hurting system performance. (OK, technically, having registry keys may slow down other programs accessing the registry, but I suspect that's minimal.) At worst, it's using quite a bit of space on the hard disk, but with even laptops coming with 300+ GB hard disks, does it really matter? If it bothers somebody, most of that can be uninstalled.

I don't have a problem with any of it being installed on the my phone. I have a problem with not being able to uninstall it from my phone. (did I mention that it's "my phone" and not AT&T's phone?) There is precious little storage space on the device. I have a 16GB card, but storage on the main device is very limited.

It looks like a pretty slick device, Stephen. I might have to trot over to our local AT&T store soon and compare the unit to my trusty Fuze.
